Body Liberation in Healthcare Settings

Body liberation states “I am more than my body.” It separates a person’s self-worth from their body. Does not focus on appearance, but rather their skills, culture, personality, etc.

As providers and clinicians, we need to be sure we are providing weight inclusive care and be careful not to say “fat phobic” comments to our patients/clients. When we do this, we are providing a safe space for people to exist. All body types deserve to exist.

We need to be mindful not to say fat phobic comments or recommend diets to patients since that person could be suffering with an eating disorder and you may not know it. Remember, ALL disease and illnesses come in ALL different sizes.

Use weight-inclusive or weight-neutral language like “person in a larger body,” instead of “fat person” or “obese.” We are meant to treat patients as a person, not a disease.

Be the reason a patient comes back to visit because they feel safe. Create an environment that is inclusive and welcoming. It will bring people back.
